When the application still supports the business process well, but its technology limits evolution, integration or the cost of maintenance. Modernizing in stages usually carries less risk and less cost than rebuilding from scratch, especially in critical systems that cannot be stopped. 

It is the set of interventions that update a legacy application without losing the business logic it has accumulated: refactoring of the code, replatforming to new platforms or the cloud, version upgrades and frameworks, and selective architectural redesign of the components that constrain the operation most.

With progressive strategies: the system is isolated by domain, capabilities are exposed through APIs, components are migrated in phases and the operation runs in parallel until each cut-over is validated. Every phase has acceptance criteria, a rollback plan and monitoring.

A contained product with a clear scope can be in production in 3 to 6 months. An enterprise platform with multiple integrations and regulatory requirements usually takes 9 to 18 months, delivering value in increments rather than in a single go-live.

By mapping integrations and data contracts from the design stage, defining a layer of APIs and testing flows end to end in production-equivalent environments, with monitoring and traceability for every transaction. 

Because a platform nobody understands does not get used, and one that is not used never returns the value it was paid for. In enterprise environments, a poor experience turns into operational errors, rework, informal workarounds and resistance to change. Adoption is people starting to use the tool; appropriation is them building it into the way they work and sustaining it over time.
